They come in their hundreds, wearing crazy outfits and buzzing with enthusiasm and Knaresborough town crier, Simon Shaw is the man with all the gossip from The Great Knaresborough Bed Race (since he has been in attendance for a whopping quarter of a century!!)
How many beds are you expecting to trundle through Knaresborough this year in a battle for the prize?
The race seems to get bigger and better year on year and this summer we are expecting 90 teams of 7 people, so it’s going to be another good turn out! In fact, we couldn’t take anymore than that.
We hear that you are known as a bit of a local entertainer... what would you say is one of your most entertaining fancy dress costumes for the event?
Every year the competition is on to be funnier and more unique than your competitors. One year myself and my team went as the Loch Ness Monster, which at 47 ft long, certainly turned some heads!
As a regular at the bed race you must have seen some funny sights in your time?
A giant dog made out of papier mache has to be one of the highlights! It was huge, even for me who often attends the race on stilts, making me 1o ft tall. There is always something amusing going on which adds to the great atmosphere!
With so many people taking part the money raised must be in the thousands – how much is usually raised?
We can usually expect somewhere in the region of £10,000.
